Walking in the shoes (or not) of the homeless – Empathy is crucial

Walking in the footwear (or not) of a homeless person is more than just a metaphor it is an invitation for the housed to empathize with the unhoused.

Taking the time and effort to understand what many of the homeless have encountered in their lives is not easy to do. Who wants to talk face-to-face with someone who has a blanket over their head or is dirty looking or is sitting in a doorway surrounded by litter? And yet, this fundamental first step is what it takes to empathize and understand what these human beings have experienced.

This simple act making the time to talk to someone who is unlike you is about being respectful and willing to learn from the individual you are listening to. Its about broadening our own perspective; it helps to build connections and unity in a city like Olympia in an attempt to not only better understand the homeless but to also find a reasonable way of addressing the growing problem of homelessness in this country.

Life is a long walk, and each of us walks a unique path. Most wear shoes; however, some do not. The photographs presented here are done so in an attempt to metaphorically foster steps toward a better understanding of those who do not.

The Olympia Union Gospel Mission accepts gently used shoes as well as other items of clothing.
