Constitutional Change for a Livable Future: The Green Amendment Tour

From September 14th to 19th, Maya K. van Rossum, founder and leader of the national movement to incorporate Green Amendments into state constitutions, will be touring Washington State across six cities. The purpose of this tour is to educate residents and legislators about the Green Amendment (GA) and Washingtons efforts to pass one. The national movement is called Green Amendments for the Generations.

A Green Amendment in Washington State would elevate every residents rights to clean air, water, and a healthy environment to the highest legal standard—integrated into our state Constitutions Declaration of Rights. This change would protect current residents and future generations alike, providing a powerful tool for communities affected by harmful industry projects—so-called “sacrifice zones”—to oppose health-damaging developments. The GA is a vital intersection of health, social justice, and environmental justice.

During the tour, titled Constitutional Change for a Livable Future: The Green Amendment Tour, Maya will visit Olympia, Vancouver, Yakima, Richland, and Spokane. The tour begins with a fundraiser in Seattle on Sunday, September 14th. These locations were carefully chosen to ensure opportunities for both Democratic and Republican communities. To pass a GA in Washington, a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate is required before it can be put to a statewide vote. Ultimately, the GA is legislation designed to safeguard the quality of life for all residents.

Support for the GA movement in Washington has grown significantly over the past three years, with 42 statewide organizations now endorsing the effort. The goal of this tour is to educate Washingtonians about the numerous benefits of a Green Amendment, provide opportunities for residents and legislators to share their views and ask questions, and motivate citizens to contact their legislators in support of the amendment as the 2026 legislative session approaches. Following the tour, there will be a virtual event with the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators in early October—please encourage your legislators to attend their nearest event!
