Poem – Alligator Alcatraz by Sam Hendrian

Alligator Alcatraz

Left church 10 minutes early

To go for a Sunday drive

Down to the bottom of the country

Where golf clubs and cheap pubs abound.

Paused for a VIP tour

Of a brand-new facility

Lovingly crafted

For allegedly loveless individuals.

Couldn’t conceal their excitement

As they passed the narrow bunk beds

And caught a glimpse of gators

Guarding every exit route.

Surely this would quicken

The baptismal proceedings

Cleansing this great country

Of unwanted faces.

Grabbed a donut on the way back

While singing along to Garth Brooks on the radio

And passing pews of preachers and spiritual teachers

Who disguised their indifference in empty platitudes.
