On Friday and Saturday April 26 and 27, a fairly random sample of people in downtown Olympia took a “penny poll.” Each person was given ten pennies to represent the federal budget and invited to allocate them among six jars to show how they would spend the federal budget.
Here are the results of what Olympia’s people want. Notice the emphasis on health and other positive programs. Notice that the military came in dead last.
Total of both days:
254: HEALTH FOR ALL FROM BABIES TO ELDERLY
197: EDUCATION AT ALL LEVELS PLUS JOB TRAINING & STUDENT AID
182: TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS PLUS ROADS & BRIDGES
174: ENVIRONMENT, ENERGY CONSERVATION, NATURAL RESOURCES, ALTERNATIVES
105: FEDERAL AGENCIES LIKE STATE, HOUSING, FOREIGN AID, FIRST AMERICANS, SOCIAL SECURITY, etc.
9: MILITARY & WEAPONS INCLUDING SALARIES, HEALTH, RESEARCH, PRODUCTION & TRANSPORT
The Coalition’s chair, Glen Anderson, said, “While the public wants far less spending for the military and far more for peaceful purposes, Congress and the President are doing the opposite. Every year they escalate spending for the military and nuclear weapons. Representative Strickland, Senators Murray and Cantwell, and President Biden are NOT listening to the public.”
