Fridays from A Woman in the Crossfire

In her book, A Woman in the Crossfire: Diaries of the Syrian Revolution, Samar Yazbek describes how in Syria the mosque became an instrument and embodiment of the power needed by opponents of the Assad Regime — somewhat similar to the role played by the church in our Civil Rights movement. As the Syrian people’s revolution against the regime evolved from March – July 2011, the people found ways to communicate important stages by naming Fridays.

Charles Mitchell and the Puget Sound Underground Railroad. Olympia Center—April 20. 1 pm. When 13 years old, Mitchell escaped enslavement in Olympia in 1860 by traveling by steamer from Olympia to Victoria, B. C. via the Puget Sound Underground Railroad. All faiths and the non-faithful are invited. Sixth-graders will talk about endangered species whose masks they have created. Mild rain is okay. If it pours, the backup is Temple Beth Hatfiloh’s Social Hall.
