Olympia Left City Coalition to host City Council candidate forum

A coalition of leftist and left-leaning groups in Olympia have organized a candidate forum for Olympia’s upcoming city council elections. The forum will take place at Capitol Theater on Sunday, October 15 at 1 pm. The forum will provide an opportunity for leftist and left-leaning residents to hold candidates’ feet to the fire, and create a record to hold candidates to should they be elected.

The groups represented under the umbrella of Olympia Left Coalition at the forum are Olympia Democratic Socialists of America, Olympia Industrial Workers of the World, Olympia Assembly, Just Housing, Thurston County Democrats, and South Puget Sound Green Party.

The organizations involved intend to pose questions on issues such as: the city’s plan for sea level rise, the police department’s use of the bail system, progressive municipal taxation, homeless rights and protections, the city’s policies for downtown development, public utility programs, democratized municipal policy-making, health care and abortion, minimum wage and predictive scheduling laws, and public lands.

The schedule will include time for statements from the candidates, a series of questions posed by the coalition organizations, and a ‘lightning round’ of yes-or-no questions, some of which will be taken from the audience.

At the time of this writing, Allen Miller, Lisa Parshley, Renata Rollins, Daniel Marsh, Clark Gilman and Max Brown have confirmed their intention to attend, and Jim Cooper and a surrogate for Jeannine Roe are expected.

The event is free and open to the public and will last less than two hours. Donations to cover the cost of renting the theater will be accepted at the door. The bar will be open.

The Thurston County Auditor will mail out ballots to registered voters Wednesday, October 18.

The last day to update an existing voter registration is October 9.  The last day for new registrations is October 30 at the Auditor’s office.
