Justice For Elijah McClain! 365 Days of Unpunished Police Murder!
August 30 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm PDT
August 30th, marks the year long memorial of the cruel killing of 23 year old Elijah McClain, at the hands of the Aurora Police Department in Aurora, CO. One year ago today, Elijah was in a coma from police brutality and lethal injection, and deemed “brain dead” and taken off of life support at the age of 23.
Elijah was a young, intelligent, sweet, compassionate, young man, who wouldn’t eat meat because “eating animals makes me sad”, who was an accomplished violinist, an avid runner, and spent his time playing his instruments for abandoned animals at the local shelter. A massage therapist, one of his clients said of him, “the sweetest, purest person I have ever met. He was definitely a light in a whole lot of darkness.”
On August 24th, 2019, after 10:30 PM, Aurora PD responded to a call about “a dangerous person wearing a mask and waving their arms.” Three officers, Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt, and Randy Roedema responded to the call. They pulled up and claimed that the suspect, Elijah McClain, who had left his apartment to get his brother an iced tea at the corner store, “resisted contact” because he continued walking after they flagged him down. Elijah had earbuds in, and a ski mask on because of his anemia and how cold Aurora gets in the evenings.
15 minutes later, the police had tackled him to the ground, used a chokehold to subdue him as he cried out that he could not breathe. At that point, they used a neck hold to cut off the blood supply to his brain, which caused him to “resist” the officers subduing him (many suspect it caused him to have a seizure). The paramedics were called and subsequently proceeded to inject a life-ending amount of Ketamine to his fragile form. When the paramedics arrived on the scene, they said Elijah was face down in a puddle of his own vomit, surrounded by police officers threatening to sick police dogs on him. (It is said they gave him enough Ketamine to subdue a 220 lbs. person and Elijah weighed 140 lbs. with anemia) He spent 6 days in the hospital. When his family finally updated the news as to his death, they said he was brain dead and covered in bruises.
The cause of death was deemed undetermined by the coroner, and all of the police officers remain on the force to this day, but one (who was fired for a lewd photo). The police officers purposefully turned their cameras away from the young man that night in August, as they proceeded to abuse him, almost as if with joy.
Elijah McClain is another in the list of those who lost their lives in horrible manners and in such sad, horrific ways at the hands of the police. Today, August 30, 2020, honor his memory by joining us for a vigil on the Capitol steps. Please bring flowers, candles, and anything else that Elijah would have enjoyed. For someone so sweet, such a source of light for those in his life, we must raise a light for him.
