Comprehensive Community Calendar now at olywip.org

Works in Progress has a new resource for the South Sound!  We have joined forces with Citizen LocalMotive to post a Community Calendar for the South Sound region of Washington on our website at olywip.org/calendar.  This is one place where you can go to find many local, progressive and community events — and even more once you make sure your organizations’ events appear on the calendar.

The Community Calendar already includes events from more than 50 organizations. This ranges from environmental groups like Citizens’ Climate Lobby and Sierra Club South Sound to  social justice organizations like CIELO, PFLAG and SURJ and political parties and organizations, like the local Green Party, Young Democrats, Our Revolution, and Indivisible groups.  You’ll find events for special interest groups such as Thurston Gun Sense on gun control and Whole Washington for universal health care, and much more.  Almost every day there is an event posted even in this time of pandemic.

It’s a calendar that automatically updates changes!

The Community Calendar is not just another calendar where events are copied. Rather, for most events, the calendar software imports the details from an organizers’ own calendars and events. Once a link to an event has been created, the software checks back once a day (until the event has occurred or is cancelled) to discover if anything has changed.

If an organizer changes the time of an event on their original listing, our calendar will catch that and update automatically. If a detail in the description changes, the Community Calendar listing of the event will update with that change. By linking to events and calendars, instead of copying, changes get updated automatically.  Linking is also much less labor intensive, so we are able to populate the Community Calendareasily  with many interesting events without consuming much volunteer effort.

How to get your events on the calendar

If your event is not already posted online somewhere, you can create a new event.  Visit the calendar for details.  If your event is already posted on a Facebook page or your organization’s Google, WordPress, Outlook or other calendar, you just need to let us know where your event is posted and we will link to it.  Here’s how:

  • If you have created a Facebook event, simply send a Facebook invite to “Blu Letters”, or
  • Email info@localmotive.org with a link to the Facebook event or other calendar posting.

It’s even better if you establish an ongoing link between your public calendar and ours.  Email us or visit the Community Calendar to find instructions for sending us an “ical” link to your Google calendar  or other calendar you would like us to import events from.  Your Google calendar can also be imported to Facebook with apps such as Zapier, so your organization would only need to enter the event details once in Google for it to be easily imported to both Facebook and our Community Calendar.  We can help get you started.

For details on more ways to manage and use the Community Calendar, go to olywip.org, open the calendar and then clink on the link to instructionsFor more background, read the article in  Works in Progress “Citizen LocalMotive creates a central community calendar.” or visit localmotive.org to listen to the KAOS Community Radio  interview of LocalMotive and Oly Embrace on John Ford’s Public Affairs show on June 18, 2018.
