Public Observation Day:West Bay Sediment Sampling – Port Plaza – March 4, 10am-2pm-

The Port of Olympia is currently collecting sediment samples in West Bay as part of the Budd Inlet Cleanup to investigate the location and amount of historic contamination along the Port Peninsula. You can observe the sediment sampling up close and ask questions of Port staff and its environmental team

Committing to Equitable, Inclusive K-12 Schools forum – Lacey Community Center, 6729 Pacific Ave SE, Lacey – March 4, 7-8:30pm – Join the League of Women Voters of Thurston County and co-sponsoring groups for a forum to explore how teacher, school administrator, and school board member training changed because of legislative requirements. The training is focused on fostering equitable education where students feel they belong. Students and parents will also share their experiences and reflect on the experiences gathered from the 2023 Healthy Youth Survey. School leadership Superintendents and Board Chairs have received special invitations to join us March 4. Come early on March 4 to meet up with the leaders of co-sponsoring organizations.

Wildfire Community Meeting –West Thurston Regional Fire Authority Littlerock Station, 10828 Littlerock Rd SW, Olympia – March 5, 6:30-7:30pm – Thurston Conservation District has partnered with multiple local, state, and federal agencies and stakeholders to develop a Community Wildfire Protection Plan for southern Thurston County. You are invited to join us on March 5th to help answer the question: How do we build wildfire resilience in our community?

Support the Legacy Forest Defense Coalition injunction preventing logging in Capitol Forest – Thurston County Superior Court, 2000 Lakeridge Dr. SW- March 7, 9am – LFDC will seek a permanent injunction to prevent logging in 2 timber stands in Capitol Forest, Cake Walk and Evergreen Gold, that were approved by the Board of Natural Resources until their lawsuit filed in January 2025 appealing the sale is decided. Urban Birding: Downtown Birding Tour – Puget Sound Estuarium, 309 State NE, Olympia – March 2 and March 23, 9-11 am – Join the Estuarium for a walk around downtown as we eye the sky for the various birds that call South Sound home! Cost – $18 More information here

Native Plant Salvage Day – Location information available after you register – March 8 and March 16; Part 1:9:30am-12:30pm and Part 2 1-3:30pm – During our salvages, volunteers save small native trees, shrubs, ferns, and herbaceous plants from local areas scheduled for clearing. At plant salvage events, you can obtain plants for your own projects and for community projects; learn more and practice plant identification skills; and meet fellow plant nerds! Salvage Day Agenda:

We meet at the development site to recover plants from 9:30 a.m. to midday, then we transition to our native plant nursery in West Olympia to pot up all the saved plants, from about 1-3:30 p.m. Join for one or both parts of the day! Sign up here

You must request a ballot through a request to elections staff at ballotrequest@thurstoncd.com or (564) 669-4929. Include your name, address, and phone number in the request. If you get an automatic reply that doesnt quite make sense, dont worry about it, your information has been received. Mail or drop off your ballot by March 18th (must be postmarked by this date).

West Bay Woods Work Parties – Bowman and Dickinson Ave near the Westside Food Coop –

March 6, March 12, March 14, March 19, March 23, March 26, March 28, April 2, 8:30am-3:30 pm – OlyEcosystems is pleased to announce that it will be partnering with the Washington Trials Association (WTA) to improve the existing trails in the West Bay Woods. Work parties will be attended by volunteers from the WTA’s network, but are also open to the general public. Participation is a great way to learn the art of trail building. Volunteers need to sign up through the WTA here

Garden Leader Community Meeting – Location TBD – March 12, 6pm – Join Thurston Conservation District to meet fellow community gardeners and partners from the Natural Resources Conservation Service and learn about support programs and funding for community gardens. Ecology Trivia Night – Le Voyeur, 404 4th Ave E, Olympia – March 20, 6 pm – Deschutes Estuary Restoration Team will be tabling and accepting donations. We’ll be there to talk about the Estuary and other issues (like the WBY), sell some sweet sweet DERT swag, and most importantly… play trivia! We hope to see you there!

South Sound Sierra Club Meeting, Puget Sound Shoreline Geology – Olympia Center, 222 Columbia St NW – March 27, 6 pm – Wendy Gerstel, a geologist with 45 years experience primarily in the Puget Sound region, will speak on shorelines and the risks of landslides and erosion from the geological perspective. Wildlife of Capitol Lake and the Coming Estuary – Interpretive Park at south end of Capitol Lake, 300 Deschutes Way SW, Tumwater – April 4, 3:30-5:30pm – Firecraft Northwest is teaming up with the Deschutes Estuary Restoration Team to lead the group on a slow meander around the trails at the Interpretive Park to identify the birds and other urban wildlife track and sign we see. We’ll discuss the current habitat and what we’re seeing as well as how the shift to an estuary might change which of those wildlife will stay, which will increase in numbers, and which might relocate to other habitats nearby.  Free
